What happens after you send a letter?
The recipient knows what to expect from the beginning — without exposing the content or creating a public profile.
- You send a private invitation. The recipient receives an email saying that a letter is waiting. The letter itself is not included in the email.
- The recipient creates a free account or signs in. An account is required to open the envelope securely and continue the correspondence.
- The letter opens inside The Old Letters. The recipient can read it in a calm, private view and answer with a letter of their own.
We do not publish the letter, create a public recipient profile or place its content in a link preview.

Does the recipient need an account?
Yes. A free account securely connects the letter to the right person, lets them open the envelope and supports continued private correspondence.
Is the letter included in the email?
No. The email only says that an invitation or letter is waiting. The letter is available only after signing in to The Old Letters.
What exactly is encrypted?
Letter content and supported attachments are encrypted on the device before upload. The server stores encrypted envelopes and account or delivery metadata such as sender, recipient and time.
What is included in the Free plan?
Free includes unlimited ordinary letters, 3 active correspondences, 1 attachment up to 10 MB per letter, 100 MB of attachment storage, 5 basic stationery designs, the classic seal and 1 scheduled ordinary letter up to 30 days ahead. No card is required.
Does one Duo subscription cover both people?
Yes. One person pays for Duo and the plan covers both connected accounts. The other person does not buy a separate subscription.
What happens to letters after cancellation?
Paid features remain active until the end of the billed period, then the account moves to Free. Received letters remain accessible; Free limits apply to future use and newly created resources.
Can I download my letters?
Yes. Eligible plans let you select specific letters and export a PDF with their stationery, ink colour, signature and seal.
What is the minimum age for using The Old Letters?
The Old Letters is currently available only to adults aged 18 or over.
